February 6 marks the two year anniversary of Southshire Roller Derby and the league is celebrating with some exciting changes. This March, Southshire will be leaving its long-time home in the Vermont Mill Properties and will move to a new location on Water Street in North Bennington. This move gives Southshire Roller Derby more room to grow, while keeping the league in the Bennington area, a location that allows Southshire to serve members from North Adams, Readsboro, Manchester, Peru and the surrounding areas.

The new space allows the league to set up a permanent training track and leaves space to allow for an additional practice area. This move lets Southshire Roller Derby continue to prepare for their second competition season in the Shires of Vermont, but also allows Southshire Roller Derby to continue to grow, recruit new members and establish an upcoming a junior’s team and a men’s competition team.

Asked about the move, league president, Amy Moore says “I am so impressed with our growth these first two years. The men and women that have come out to skate and grow with us have been filled with the pioneering spirit I love here in the Shires of Vermont. Of course, we could only have succeeded as well as we have with the support we’ve received from Jan and John Goodrich of Vermont Mills Properties, the Bennington and Manchester communities, and all our business sponsors.”

The league relies on member dues for their practice space. Sponsorship is used to produce their competitive home season. “After the production success of our 2015 season at Riley Rink we’ve grown our numbers and skills. We’ve increased the number of home games to four and are looking forward to a big, regional training event that will bring over 100 skaters to the area in June,” says Coaching Coordinator Liza “Don’t Care Bear” Goldberg.

The league will be hosting its 2016 season at the Manchester Center venue starting May 21 and running through September 24. Visiting teams for the Battle Cats are scheduled from New York, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts this year. Along side the women, there will be some men’s games and Junior’s exhibitions planned.
