Inaugural competition season comes to a close

The Southshire Battle Cats recently celebrated the end of their first competition season in a fun, Nightmare Before Christmas-themed away game in Wilbraham, Mass. against Pair O’Dice Rollers, losing 231-65. This is the second time the Battle Cats faced Pair O’Dice Rollers, having faced the same awesome ladies at Southshire’s very first home bout on July 11.

The Battle Cats started their season early this year, traveling to to skate against Hartford Roller Derby‘s Beat City Bedrockers in the Battle Cats’ first bout ever in April. The Battle Cats lost 244-118.

In June the Battle Cats were given the amazing opportunity to skate against Reading Derby Girls in a 30-minute challenge bout during this year’s East Coast Derby Extravaganza.

The Battle Cats lost away in Brattleboro in August against the East Coast Derby Damez, and faced the Monadnock Mad Knockers of Antrim, N.H. in a home bout on September 5.

Southshire finishes the season 0-6. Despite their losses this season, the Battle Cats managed to advance from 956th to 947th in the U.S. before their final away game of the season, according to Flat Track Stats. They drew impressive crowds to their home events at Manchester’s Riley Rink, and recruited several new players.

Next year, Southshire Roller Derby hopes to expand to add both a B-Team and a Junior’s team. Currently, Southshire has several men practicing with them, and they hope to have a men’s team competing next year.
