For the past 7 years, Bitches Bruze has been commuting long hours every week to play roller derby. Her skater number, 802, was chosen because she was the first flat track roller derby skater in Vermont, joining the Albany All Stars in August 2007.
She co-founded the Hellions of Troy in September 2008 and later joined Pioneer Valley Roller Derby (the first co-ed league) and joined their coaching staff in 2010. Combining her love and experience in multimedia, she began creating classes in teamwork and strategy for Pioneer Valley and publishing studies of strategy on YouTube. Along with her announcing for the WFTDA (and now WFTDA.tv), she became known in the world-wide derby community for her ability to analyze teams and skaters and has since been a guest coach around the United States and Europe.
But Bennington County is her home having lived in Pownal, VT since 1995 with her husband; men’s derby skater and coach, Will Jettison.
In November 2013, after returning from a coaching trip in Ireland and England, her BFF, Don’t Care Bear, got a job in Bennington. Bear has also been skating and coaching derby for 7 years, but for 9 years prior to that was a competitive speed skater based in New Jersey. Bear has a wide variety of experience in derby as well while being a referee for the New Jersey Hellrazors and a skater, coach, and Captain with the Garden State Roller Girls.
While they’re still members of the Elm City Derby Damez (Keene, NH) and bouting with the Damez this season in Brattleboro and beyond, they decided to check out the interest in derby locally and have been amazed with the dedication and interest shown by the people of the community here.
