Now in our third year, Southshire Roller Derby continues its commitment to training skaters of all ages and skill levels. We have new skater orientation for both adults and juniors coming up.
Adult New Skater Orientation
For men and women 18 years of age an older who want to be more fit, work with a team, develop good balance and a strong core, we have a New Skater Orientation Sunday June 5 at 6pm.
Prior skating or athletic experience is NOT required. We will teach you how to skate from the most basic steps on up through high level skill and strategy! We work through a level system in which skaters learn and demonstrate a given level of skills before they may advance to more advanced derby. For example, you must pass Level 1 skills to demonstrate you have enough command of your body and skates to even be eligible to learn now to contact other skaters.
If you don’t think contact sports are for you, but you’re looking for a fun, guided way to learn to skate and be involved, you can train to referee roller derby. Referring is just as challenging and rewarding as competing and requires some pretty fancy skating skills as well.
We welcome new skaters at any time, but this orientation night will start with about an hour of sharing with you the history of our league, costs you can expect for skating and staying with derby, gear needs and answering questions. Then we’ll get you geared up in some skates and protective gear and invite you to join us in your first practice! Don’t worry, you won’t be getting hit or doing whips your first day. The orientation is absolutely free. We recommend you wear clothes you can exercise in and bring a mouth guard. After your first two practices, monthly dues are $40.
441 Water Street, North Bennington. Park in the north lot by the glass doors and walk around the corner to our entrance. We’ll put signs out for you.
Junior Derby New Skater Orientation and Summer Season
Children ages 6 through 17 are welcome to join us for a short orientation and then some observation of the last day of our Spring Season of junior derby June 14, 2016 at our practice space at 441 Water Street, North Bennington.
Our Summer Season begins Tuesday July 12. The 10 week session is $60 for 2 hours of coach-led practices Tuesdays 5:30 – 7:30pm. Additionally, all new skaters who did not participate in our Spring season will have to pay $45 for WFTDI (insurance).
Please note: while adult skaters may skate during their New Skater Orientation, waivers alone are not sufficient for children under 18 years of age and we do not have loaner gear for juniors. So all new skaters must pay for their WFTDI in advance of skating and will need to acquire gear. Orientation will help families get the right gear for their child.
Please RSVP and feel free to ask any questions at email@example.com.
If you miss our orientation or need additional paperwork, all the details about our program and links to our paperwork can be found on our Junior Training Program page. Paypal links for payment of insurance and season dues are available on the payment portal. And our 2016 season schedule is available on our Junior Season page.
